OK, so as always I come up with the best idea after I already decided on something else. Oh well. What I really should have done was come up with two of the better songs from the IRS catalog, say, "Wolves, Lower" and "Save It For Later," or maybe even two of the ridiculous hits from the IRS catalog. Who wouldn't have loved "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades" vs. "Mexican Radio"? But alas, that's not what we have. Instead it's a more classic Tax Day battle.

First we've got The Fall's "Pay Your Rates." Which is obviously going to win. Because who can top the mighty Fall-ah, especially with one of the best songs from their best album. Yes, I think Groteqsue is the best Fall album. I'm pretty confident about that, too. Three absolute, all-time, #1 crazy insane classics ("How I Wrote Elastic Man," "Totally Wired," "The NRWA"), three of the great pseudo-psychobilly Fall tunes ("City Hobgoblins," "Pay Your Rates," "Container Drivers"), not to mention "English Scheme," "New Face in Hell" and "Gramme Friday." I mean, wow. "Pay Your Rates" has some classic Mark E. screeching ("Pay the borough ... Pay the BOROUGH!") to go along with some great Riley/Scanlon guitar. This is one those tunes that I have in mind every time I try to write a song.
I didn't want to use The Beatles' "Taxman" for the other choice, although it would have given me a good forum to go off on how The Fall > The Beatles and it's not even particularly close. But PS came through with The Music Machine's cover of the tune and has this to say about it:

The (Bonniwell) Music Machine is the Nuggets band with the krrrrrrr-aziest (sic) current webpage. Go there now! Beyond that, though, they were also one of the most distinctive Nuggets bands, with dark hair, dark gloves (gloves! genius!), and some of the darker garage rock of the era. Their debut album Turn On features two of the heaviest slabs of American rama-lama of all time, "Talk Talk" and "The People in Me", along with Scooby-Doo soundtrack outtake, "Trouble." For today's Friday challenge, SD turns to one of Turn On's token contemporary covers, The Beatles' (heard of 'em??) "Taxman." What makes this version better than the original for me - and it IS better than the original - is that instrument-o-my-soul, the DRUMS. Charging out of the gate, The Music Machine's rhythm section obliterates McCartney-Starr. Guitar solo mixed a little low, maybe, but that's like proto-indie-rock, right? Mixing things low, not being heard, etc etc etc etc? Listen close for the American-ized lyrics...
Why, thank you for that, PS. It doesn't change the verdict, obviously. The Fall never lose on SD.
Download "Pay Your Rates"
Download "Taxman"

I vote for the Fall.
Although "Death and Taxes" by Kid Dynamite is far better than both.
